The Urge to Heal

Once I met an angel
With torn up ripped out wings.
Fascinated I lured him in from harm,
Playing the clown so he would laugh again
And gave him a haven in which to sing.

I built a sanctuary,
Gave him treats and baths of flowers,
Then offered to mend his wings.
So, he displayed his street fallen feathers
From pigeon's quiet to raven's power.

He spoke to me with eyes alight
Of places he had flown.
And I saw new possibilities,
Dreams flooded me with rapture
Of freedom I had never known.

A dirty bedraggled collection
Of feathers lay at my feet.
Difficult to bind to what remained
Needle and thread caused tears and blood
So I filled the tears with hot glue heat.

With sweat and care
And fingers slightly singed
Hoping to win favor I rebuilt the precious wings,
Slowly formed, raggedy and sparse
With a carefully ruffled fringe.

I cheered at their completion,
But when he saw what I had done
He cried out in flightless anguish.
A mottled train of feathers drooped
Where his glorious wings had hung.

I held him tight
With frightened pleading hands
Begging him, forgive the imperfection
Grounded to the earth crafted of clay
Light grace was not at my command.

Mollified he sat
Quietly stewing in his cage.
I sat content with my companion
While slowly his wings grew stronger
Beating the bars with frustrated rage.

I made him promise,
Never leave me alone,
And opened up the gate.
He spread the wings trailing clouds of dust,
Freeing strength with each stroke to roam.

For days I could not rest
Eyes skyward full of fear.
I searched for blackened clouds of dust
Or reasons I should lack the trust
Of an angel I tried to hold too near.

When he finally came to rest again
The wings were glorious white.
He spoke of flight away from fear,
But I asked him not to leave again
And I held him close and tight.

I cried and pleaded PLEASE DON'T GO
Sure I could never follow.
I was too afraid to try.
So he flew to where the angels soar
And found beauty in love's hallow.

I, left stranded on the earth
Amid dusty feathers and fallen leaves,
Wonder, could I put on my wings?
