Love Rules

1 If you're breaking someone's toys, they're asking more of you than you have to give.

I wanted so much to please him that I tried to play his games,
But my hands refused to cooperate.
Now the dumpster is full of broken pieces,
And no one ever won.

He tried so hard to please me
That he totaled my car the last time he picked me up from work.
Still, I asked him to see me,
And he broke my window trying to get my attention.
Still, I wanted him to build me a home,
But when he spilled lacquer on the rug
I had to tear up the carpet and repaint the walls to forget he'd lived there.

Don't hate me for saying this,
But I'm in love, and have been for a while now.
Ever since I realized that once I stopped asking him to help me breathe,
I have enough strength to do it myself.

2 You'll get what you seek.

I dreamed he handed me hope in a circle of our friends
In the form of a ring,
And I cried.

He came to me later, head bowed,
Handed me the receipt and asked me to promise
To have and to hold his secret
Until he was ready to give it to her.
I cried.

Only those I've feared losing have left.

Don't hate me for saying this,
But I'm in love, and have been for a while now.
Ever since I realized that it doesn't have to stop,
Just because he loves somebody else.

3 It only comes when you're not ready for it.

Just when I'd survived my first year on my own,
And was happy with my freedom for the first time in my life,
I turn to see him.
Before even knowing his name I think to myself,
"Fuck, fuck, fuck, I'm in trouble."

After seven months of trying to cross a mine field of disasters
Just to hold his hand again,
I realize I was right in the first place.
But, it's too late for retreat with my stubborn heart.
Now I wait to see whether I am the prize or casualty
In a war that is not my own.

I know that whatever the outcome,
I will have to heal myself first.

Don't hate me for saying this,
But I'm in love, and may be forever.
Ever since I learned to stop waiting for it to be returned,
And laugh at myself for wasting tears asking why.

4 The more time you spend trying to figure out whether or not it's real,
The less time you have to enjoy… that it is.
