Today i slept and drank cold syrup and lots of liquids. I also finished Terry Pratchett's Wyrd Sisters, a fun rollicking romp with plenty of Shakespeare references for amusement. I can't seem to rid myself of the headache though that makes sitting at the computer and typing unbearable. We also found the festival where we'll be performing for the cinco de mayo arts festival here in Shreveport tomorrow. I'm going back to bed in hope that i'll wake up tomorrow feeling better.~w

We made it to Shreveport to Louisiana. Tomorrow there are no shows so i can sleep all day. Maybe my stuffy nose will go away. I don't know what else to say.~w

My nose tried to run away today, but i wouldn't let it.

Ciro tried to leave his brain behind today but he got back to the hotel with it safely.

It was one of those days when everything took twice as much effort just to get throught it. The students and faculty here in Katy were very helpful, but we felt like it was difficult for us to just speak the words of the poems in the right order. I did get the rest of the hotels for next week booked though thanks to a little patience on my part. Roomsaver usually has some great discount coupons, but their server was sssssllllooow today. Again, a day spent mostly keeping it all together although we did take time out to eat sushi at Miyako (yum yum) and pick up a book recommended to us by a teacher this week that sounded interesting. I'll let you know how it goes once we get started reading it this weekend.~w

We had a blast today at Hastings 9th Grade center. The faculty and students were all very kind and made us really feel at home. It was wonderful to feel so welcome. Especially since i spent the rest of my day sorting out information for next week from the next group of schools. The tedious part of this job is checking in exhausted to a hotel and having to spend the next several hours on more business. I think i found one hotel of the three for next week though.

Mostly i want to sleep and do shows and sleep again. I'll catch up with myself eventually though.~w

I woke with a scratchy throat this morning. Make it go away!! Lots of juice and vitamins for me today along with Chicken Phò. I must stay healthy until we get a weekend off again in a couple of weeks.

We performed for 9th graders in Houston and had excellent mexican food for lunch, and vietnamese food for dinner. Splendid! Laundry finally got done this afternoon and i started in on the paperwork for next week only pausing to put up the new student poem(s) of the month on the Poetry Alive! site. Now it's time for a bedtime story and some sleep so the scratchy throat will be gone.~w

Starved for new reading material we stopped at the first bookstore we saw. After a bit of deliberation we settled on Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. However, it was such a switch in language style i had a hard time reading it out loud. Ciro read the second chapter to me instead and that seemed to go better. I'll have to let him finish the book. I think the speech pattern of the main character is easier for ciro to catch on first read although there we still some parts that baffled him as well. It's very different to read out loud and try to get the inflection right the first time rather than just looking at the words and imagining them spoken in your head. The tongue trips over alliteration and tries to jump ahead to where you brain is in the sentence.

Ah well. Another driving day is done and now we are set to start an early day in the 9th grade tomorrow back in Houston.~w

We left Kentucky and dove back into the Congo of Kingsolver's The Poisonwood Bible to emerge slightly changed in New Orleans. The Internation Reading Association convention starts tomorrow as 17,000 educators descend on the city, right in the middle of Jazz Fest. Fortunately, we were trying to do any more than meet our boss at his hotel for dinner before driving on to Baton Rouge which is much quieter tonight.

I must say it was odd to find myself so engrossed in a book that it was a suprise to come back to a whole new place when i looked out the window. In a way it is sad to finish such a well written and thought provoking book. There are no more tidbits to learn from these characters, no more quirky remarks or poetry from their voices. Strangely for a book full of tragedy there is an immense amount of joy. Unfortunately, it brings to light many questions concerning the American goverment's involvement in foreign affairs. The Congo is one of many countries that both republicans and democrats have meddled in to supposedly stop the spread of the communist threat and in the process replaced democratic governments with dictatorships or puppet governments. The end result? The spread of US capitalism (profit). That's probably why politicians are slavering over the whole "China problem." If you look closely you can see the glint of dollar signs in their eyes.

Tomorrow is Texas.~w
